Prepare for Your Stay

Your journey to parenthood is almost complete. You are excited to be making final plans for the trip to the hospital, and as with most everything in life, planning ahead will help to ensure you have the best delivery experience possible. The big day will be here sooner than you think, so it's important to complete your hospital pre-registration at Valley Presbyterian Hospital no later than the sixth month of your pregnancy. In addition to your pre-registration, there are other items you'll want to check off your list.

Pack Your Bag

As you've either heard or learned by now, babies give little advance notice to signal their arrival. Packing an overnight bag and leaving it by your front door at the ready allows you and your family to locate the items needed for your stay quickly and easily.

These are essential items for your labor and delivery packing list:

  • Blanket for baby
  • Button-down nightgown or pajamas
  • Deodorant
  • Going-home outfit for baby
  • Going-home outfit for mom
  • Hairbrush
  • Identification card
  • Infant car seat
  • Insurance card
  • Makeup
  • Nursing bra
  • Relaxation items for labor (tennis ball, massage lotion, etc.)
  • Robe
  • Shampoo
  • Socks
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste

California law requires that all newborns be transported in a car seat. Please make sure you know how to properly install and operate your infant car seat. Following the California car seat and seat belt laws can help protect your family, avoid fines, and most importantly, save lives.

You may also ask your partner to bring:

  • Radio or audio player
  • Snacks

Everything else that you will need in the hospital will be provided for you. Please leave your jewelry, cash and other valuables at home.
