Your journey to parenthood is almost complete. You are excited to be making
final plans for the trip to the hospital, and as with most everything
in life, planning ahead will help to ensure you have the best delivery
experience possible. The big day will be here sooner than you think, so
it's important to complete your hospital pre-registration at Valley
Presbyterian Hospital no later than the sixth month of your pregnancy.
In addition to your pre-registration, there are other items you'll
want to check off your list.
Be Ready…Pack Your Bag
As you've either heard or learned by now, babies give little advance
notice to signal their arrival. Packing an overnight bag and leaving it
by your front door at the ready allows you and your family to locate the
items needed for your stay quickly and easily. Below is a list of essential
items for your labor and delivery packing list:
- Insurance card
- Identification card
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Deodorant
- Shampoo
- Hairbrush
- Makeup
- Relaxation items for labor (tennis ball, massage lotion, etc.)
- Robe
- Button-down nightgown or pajamas
- Nursing bra
- Socks
- Going-home outfit for mom
- Going-home outfit for baby
- Blanket for baby
- Infant car seat
California law requires that all newborns be transported in a car seat.
Please make sure you know how to properly install and operate your infant
car seat. Following the California car seat and seat belt laws can help
protect your family, avoid fines, and most importantly, save lives.
You may also want to ask your partner to bring:
- A camera
- Snacks
- A radio or audio player
- Phone numbers for family members or others you may want to call
Everything else that you will need in the hospital will be provided for
you. Please leave your jewelry, cash and other valuables at home.
Free Maternal Child Health Education
To help inform and educate you about the various stages of your pregnancy,
including breastfeeding and infant care, our Maternity Services unit offers
a wide selection of free
Maternal Child Health Education classes.
All classes offered in English and Spanish, unless otherwise noted, and
are held in Valley Presbyterian Hospital's Health Education Center.
Valet parking is available, and we strongly encourage this option for
expecting mothers. Please plan to arrive at least 10-15 minutes before
class to verify registration.
