Interventional Radiology (IR) is among the most advanced sub-specialties
within the Heart & Vascular Services program at Valley Presbyterian
Hospital, offering both minimally invasive image-guided procedures and
diagnostic imaging. Our teams diagnose and treat cardiac and vascular
patients with computerized tomography (CT), ultrasound, magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) and other methods.
Many conditions that once required traditional surgery can be treated by
minimally invasive image-guided procedures, significantly reducing the
risk of complications, pain and hospital time for equivalent treatments.
For example, our expert medical teams of cardiologists, radiologists and
vascular surgeons may use catheters to place precisely a thin tube (catheter)
within the blood vessels, arteries or heart. Once in place, the catheter
can be used to perform ablation, angiography, arteriography and venography,
among other procedures.
In addition, Interventional Radiologists may use CT and ultrasound for
biopsies, drainages, line placements and other procedures. Some IR procedures
may also be done in the Emergency Room.
