Our Welcome Baby Program
Valley Presbyterian Hospital offers a Welcome Baby program with free hospital
and home-based services to all families who deliver in our Maternity Services unit.
The Welcome Baby program was made possible entirely through a grant from
First 5 LA, a child and family advocacy organization. The hospital has
partnered with nonprofit organization El Nido Family Centers to provide
home-based services to Welcome Baby participants.
The goal of Welcome Baby is to work with families to enhance the parent-child
relationship and maximize the health, safety and security of the baby,
while linking families to support services as needed. Welcome Baby provides
new and expecting moms a Registered Nurse and a personal Parent Coach
to offer support and information during pregnancy and through the baby's
first nine months. There are multiple levels of engagement with the patient,
including one-on-one visits in the home, at the hospital and by phone.
These engagements provide parents with an opportunity to learn about topics
such as parenting and early child development, nutrition, breastfeeding,
maternal depression, and home safety, and provide assistance with obtaining
basic health care and insurance coverage for both mom and baby.
In addition to education and support, Welcome Baby participants also may
receive baby-friendly items including developmentally appropriate toys,
thermometers, nursing pillows and baby-proofing supplies for their home.
By providing these items to families, the program aims to enhance the
home environment in a way that will nurture the healthy and safe development
of children. All families will benefit in different ways from Welcome
Baby depending on where they live and each family's specific needs.
