Services We Provide in the Emergency Department

When you or a family member has a life-threatening medical emergency such as a heart attack, stroke, severe injury, unconsciousness, or a non-life-threatening issue that needs attention, highly trained doctors, nurses, and care teams at Valley Presbyterian Hospital quickly and compassionately assess what is needed, assign a dedicated team, and deliver expert treatment.

These are some of the services we provide 24 hours a day / 7 days a week in our Emergency Department:

STEMI Receiving Center

It is important to act fast when there is a heart problem. Dedicated to saving lives and providing patients with the best possible outcomes, a highly skilled cardiac response team is ready to treat patients having heart attacks within 30 minutes of arriving at our Emergency Department.

Los Angeles County has designated Valley Presbyterian Hospital as a STEMI Receiving Center, among only 36% of hospitals nationwide. When paramedics bring heart attack patients to our Emergency Services unit, they are quickly examined and depending on their diagnosis and condition, are provided with immediate intensive medical or surgical care including angiography, angioplasty, or even bypass surgery, using state-of-the-art technology.

Certified Primary Stroke Center

We are certified as a Primary Stroke Center by the American Heart and the American Stroke Association, and DNV Healthcare. As a Primary Stroke Center, our Emergency Department has shown that it meets standards to support better outcomes for stroke care.

The team includes board-certified neurologists, radiologists and other medical professionals that are specially trained to diagnose and treat strokes, using advanced technology to act fast and save lives. The care we provide is different for each person's needs, and we keep patients involved in their treatment plan. We are committed to providing quality care from the onset of stroke symptoms through rehabilitation.

Care for Pediatric Patients

Not all hospitals have the staff and equipment needed to treat children with injuries and illnesses. Los Angeles County has approved Valley Presbyterian Hospital as an Emergency Department Approved for Pediatrics (EDAP), which means we have specialized pediatric teams ready to assemble, triage and fast-track children to the care they urgently need, with highly trained, on-call pediatric surgeons and anesthesiologists.

We also have been designated as a Pediatric Medical Center (PMC), providing specialized care for every age and stage of a child’s development. The PMC designation allows a team of pediatric specialists to treat and handle a higher level of care needed for patients in our Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). Every child receives the full attention of the team, which includes physicians, pediatric nurses, case managers and other professionals who work together to deliver coordinated care that meets the medical and emotional needs of children.

Hospitalist and Laborist Programs

Our Hospitalist and Laborist/OB Hospitalist Programs provide doctors for patients admitted through our Emergency Department. When a patient doesn’t have a primary care doctor or is from outside Los Angeles, a Hospitalist may be provided to help with care while in the hospital. Board-certified Hospitalists, led by Sanjay V. Vadgama, MD, work with other doctors, staff, and services so patients have high quality, coordinated care during their stay.

If the patient is pregnant and does not have an obstetrician, has not had prenatal care, and/or is from outside Los Angeles, a Laborist/OB Hospitalist may be provided. The Laborists/OB Hospitalists are board-certified obstetricians who ensure the safety and care of women and babies during delivery and throughout their hospital stay in our Maternity Services unit.
