More advanced. Less invasive.

The Valley Hip & Knee Institute remains on the leading-edge of orthopedic procedures, enhancing the patient experience as well as the quality of life with breakthrough procedures performed by only a handful of specialists — including ours.

Birmingham Hip Resurfacing System®

Preserving bone, restoring mobility.

Traditional hip replacement involves removing a significant amount of bone to replace the damaged joint with an implant. Younger patients who undergo this procedure can wear out these joint replacements, requiring them to undergo a second operation. The Valley Hip & Knee Institute offers patients the latest Birmingham Hip Resurfacing System®, a less invasive alternative to traditional hip replacement.

Unlike traditional hip replacement, the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing System® preserves most of the natural leg bone and actually enhances bone strength around the hip. The damaged cartilage and the first layer of the hip bone are smoothed and replaced with a durable, high carbide chrome. This metal-on-metal joint produces 98% less wear than the traditional metal-on-plastic design. The hip joint’s functional mobility is restored, allowing patients to return to their active lifestyle. The resurfaced hip joint becomes stronger with every step the patient takes.

Traditional Joint Replacement

Smaller incisions lead to faster recovery.

For patients who suffer chronic and severe hip and knee pain caused by damaged cartilage that doesn’t respond to other medical treatments, surgery may provide the best option for restoring joint function and relieving pain. Valley Hip & Knee Institute surgeons excel in replacing damaged joints with implants, using increasingly smaller incisions that translate to less pain, quicker recovery and better outcomes for patients.

Mobile Bearing Knee Implant

Increased mobility, decreased wear.

Valley Knee & Hip Institute’s orthopedic surgeons have introduced our patients to an array of advancements in traditional joint replacement, including the Mobile Bearing Knee implant. Unlike the fixed-bearing replacement traditionally used, the Mobile Bearing Knee Implant allows better rotation of the knee. Designed to prevent loosening in places where it’s attached to the bone, this implant also helps reduce early wear — and the need for additional surgery.

Here for patients every step of their recovery.

Located on the campus of Valley Presbyterian Hospital, our comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation program addresses the individual needs of each joint replacement patient. Developed by the orthopedic surgeon, primary care physician, physical and occupational therapists and other specialists, each patient’s customized rehabilitation plan begins the moment surgery ends and extends throughout outpatient care.
